A whopping 81% of US gamers picked up new mobile and console games during COVID-19 lockdowns according to a survey of over 6 million Americans conducted by Fluent.
Around 31% of gamers played new games on their phones.
Women were 31% more likely to add a new game to their phone during quarantine while men were 60% more likely to add new games to other devices.
The majority (73%) of gamers played played up to three new games while being locked down. Just 13% played six or more games.
Over half of Americans also admitted that they played games for more than one hour per day with 41% playing one hour or less.
It may come as a surprise that women were at the forefront of that trend with 60% spending over one hour playing games daily compared to 56% of male gamers.
However, the majority (58%) continue to play free games while 25% purchased new games during quarantines.
Women were more likely to play free games compared to men.
Users (44%) typically spent $1 to $20 on new games with fewer gamers (14%) spending more than $100 for game purchases.
There are some good news for game developers as 67% of Americans plan to continue to play the same games they purchased during lockdowns even once restrictions lift. Baby boomers are leading this trend while millennials are the most likely to stop playing the same games.
The findings are testament to how COVID-19 lockdowns changed mobile gaming and consumer behaviours.
“The pandemic has had asubstantial impact on the gaming industry. Game installs as well as in-app activity have increased significantly as a result of stay-at-home orders nationwide,” said Matt Conlin, president and co-founder of Fluent. “46% of Americans have started playing new games on their phones and other devices while observing stay-at-home orders. This represents a great opportunity for gaming app developers to drive long-lasting engagement and returns.”
