Week in Review – Twitter and Snapchat shine with positive financial results, but user numbers stagnate

The big players

It seems the hard work is finally paying off for Snapchat. After reporting weak earnings last year, the messaging app set out to redesign the app late last year. Snapchat added 8.9 million users during the last quarter of 2017. Total daily active users are now at 187 million.
Meanwhile, Twitter saw its stocks skyrocket 25% after announcing Q4 2017 earnings. Despite the positive results, Twitter’s monthly active user (MAU) base seems to be stagnating between quarters.
Snapchat is finally bringing its redesigned app to UK users. Overall, the redesign hasn’t been all that well received among users many of whom have expressed their anger in App Store reviews. 
Snap Inc seems to be exploring new avenues to generate revenue. Now, the company has opened a merchandise store within the Snapchat app. Snapchatters and fans of the creative messaging app will be able to purchase clothing as well as other branded items.
Google will be launching its YouTube Go service in 130 countries after initially trialing the service in India in 2017. YouTube Go is a more light-weight version of the popular video app when it comes to data consumption.
As concerns are growing that social media and mobile technologies may be harmful to children’s but also grown-up’s health, a new coalition has been formed to address the issue in the US. Created by ex-employees of Facebook, Mozilla, Nvidia and Google, the Center for Humane Technology will partner with Common Sense, the advocacy organization for kids in the digital age to focus on protecting the young from potential digital manipulation and addiction.
Instagram is now trialling sharing of public posts from other users to their own Story feeds. Reposts of public posts (e.g. from celebrities) offer another means of engagement for Instagram, but it also opens the door for users to share branded and sponsored posts in the future.


Video marketing is set to increase rapidly over the coming years, according to a new research from WyzowlThe State of Video Marketing 2018 found that a whopping 81% of businesses already use video as a promotional and marketing tool – up from 63% in 2017.
Watching YouTube is now nearing saturation in the UK, according to new research by eMarketer. The latest data suggests that 90% of people who view digital videos are regularly visiting the platform.
A majority of marketers still consider email to be a top marketing priority for 2018, according to new research from Yes Lifecycle Marketing. The survey among 300 marketers found that 89% of them consider email to be an important ad channel despite a growing focus on social media and mobile apps.
According to the latest Digital Benchmark Report by Marin Softwareshopping adverts continue to gain momentum as clicks increased 8% and click share 31% during Q4 2017.
According to research from the International Data Corporation (IDC), 49.6 million tablets were shipped during Q4 2017. That’s a drop of 7.9% when compared to the 53.8 million which were shipped in Q4 2016.
Around a third of the world population (or 2.38 billion people) are going to stream online video content in 2018. According to research by eMarketer, mobile devices are leading the trend in Internet video streaming.

Product launches

Mobile app performance company PacketZoom  has partnered with Amazon CloudFront to include CloudFront as part of the PacketZoom Mobile Expresslane service. As part of the solution, it provides mobile app developers with a mobile platform that offers a variety of tools for their network performance needs.
Drawbridge, the identity management company, has just partnered with customer data platform mParticle to offer brands, developers and publishers a simpler workflow. The partnership aims to encourage clients to increase the use of customer data.
