Game development company Niantic has raised $30m in its Series A funding round. The investment comes from Google, Nintendo, and The Pokemon Company Group, and consists of $20m in an upfront sum, with a further $10 ready for when the firm reaches certain preset — but not described in the press release — milestones.
Pokemon Go is Niantic’s next major game release, coming in 2016
Niantic is best known for Ingress, its real-world, location based mobile game that mixes exciting storytelling with innovative, community-based gameplay. Recently, it has announced Pokemon Go, a game with a similar play style to Ingress, but set in the Pokemon world.
According to John Hanke, CEO at Niantic, the new investment will be used to continue development of this game, further build the Ingress platform, and to design and release new titles. Pokemon Go will be released for both iOS and Android in 2016, while Ingress has passed a total of 13 million downloads since its release.
