Facebook is going to launch a dedicated app to livestream gaming content in an effort to rival platforms like YouTube, Microsoft Mixer and Amazon Twitch.

Dubbed Facebook Gaming the app became officially available on the Google Play store on Monday. Apple has yet to approve the app for its App Store.

It provides a mixture of access to casual gaming content and allows users to join in with gaming communities.

By clicking the Go Live button, users can stream other mobile games.

Facebook was planning to release the live-streaming app in June, but fast-tracked its development in light of a growing number of mobile gamers during the coronavirus lockdown.

According to a report by The New York Times, the social network has been testing the app in Southeast Asia and Latin America in the last 18 months.

The release is important for Facebook as it seeks to expand its platform for gamers and sign influencers with a huge number of followers on exclusive deals.

Over 700 million of Facebook users have played games or viewed gaming videos on the social network.
