Drawing on the board game Monopoly, Monopoly Go was developed by games company Scopely as a free-to-play title and launched in April 2023. The app blends elements from the board game with new locations and a focus on social interactions to encourage friends to play together.
Scopely was founded in 2011 as an interactive entertainment company and mobile video game developer and publisher by Walter Driver, Ankur Bulsara, Eric Futoran and Eytan Elbaz. Former Electronic Arts executive Javier Ferreira joined in 2014 and, along with Walter Driver, became co-CEO.
The company released several free-to-play mobile games soon after its launch, including Dice with Buddies, Jewels with Buddies and Mini Golf MatchUp. A partnership with Hasbro on the official Yahtzee game followed, along with a mobile game based on The Walking Dead graphic novels and a match-3 game with World Wrestling Entertainment. By June 2019, the company had surpassed $1 billion in lifetime revenue.
Holding company Hasbro has owned the rights to Monopoly products since it bought Parker Brothers, the makers, in 1991. Hasbro’s Franchise Brands, which includes Monopoly, make several billion dollars annually and the board game has had over 300 variants since its creation.
Monopoly Go is Scopely’s third collaboration with Hasbro, after Yahtzee With Buddies and Scrabble Go were released in 2017 and 2020. Scopely was purchased by Savvy Games Group for $4.9 billion a week before the launch of the app.
The game offers new characters, daily events and mini-games and despite its recent launch it has already led the mobile board game charts and entered the top 5 free mobile game charts based on downloads in more than 100 countries.
