David is a freelance writer and event host. He launched Mobile Marketing Magazine in November 2005 and edited it for 18 years before returning to a freelance career in December 2023.

He was also the co-founder of Masterclassing, which brings together digital marketers and brands for thought leadership and knowledge exchange sessions.

He now helps companies with their content requirements across press releases, thought leadership articles, whitepapers, award entries, and everything else in between and beyond.

When not working, you’ll find him walking his dog Alf, with his wife Jo, playing padel, cooking, or listening to music.

In your own words, what’s your role in the app business right now?

I write on behalf of various clients, creating content that represents their perspectives and goals.

How did you end up working in apps?

I got started in the app space when I launched Mobile Marketing Magazine in 2005—back before mobile apps even existed.

What are you most excited about in apps right now?

Personalization and monetization.

Is there anyone you’d like to shout out to who has influenced your journey in the app industry?

I’ve always had a lot of time for Mick Rigby at Yodel Mobile, he has built a great business there.

What’s in your app tech stack?

Not relevant for me, but I am one week away from hitting a 1,800-day streak on Duolingo.

What do you like most about working in apps?

The people, the tech, the ideas.

What one thing would you change about the app industry?

I’d like to see a more user-friendly, unobtrusive way to re-engage people who haven’t used an app in a while.

If you weren’t working in apps what would you be doing?

I’d probably be writing about other aspects of adtech.

Duolingo, Google Maps, and Trainline.

I used to be a half-decent footballer, but my knees are shot now. I now play padel, which is the best game ever
