US mobile player spending and downloads decline in H1 2022

Both player spending and downloads declined during H1 2022 in the US as the market dropped 9.6% to $11.4 billion, according to new data from Sensor Tower.

Based on an analysis of the 14 main game genres in H1 2022 versus H1 2021 in the US, the latest report shows that as the cost of living and inflation increase, spending declined.

Overall, downloads declined 2.5% to 2.4 billion. In Q2, revenue dropped 11.4% to $5.6 billion while downloads were flat at 1.2 billion.

Arcade was the fastest rising game genre with player spend up 14.8%. To $176 million. Idler was the largest subgenre at $88 million in spending. 

The second fastest-growing genre by revenue was Tabletop increasing by 1% to $389 million. 

All other mobile game genres saw declines in overall player spending. The Racing genre was hit hardest at a drop of almost 29%.

Puzzle games fell almost 9% for player spending, followed by Casino and Strategy games. 

When broken down by revenue, Arcade grew the fastest at 18% to $89.4 million, followed by Hypercasual at 2.3%. 

All other genres declined with Racing dropping 38% for revenues. 

In terms of downloads, Action genres grew 5.4% during the first half of 2022. Sports games remained flat while all other genres declined in downloads. Casino and Arcade games saw some of the steepest declines for downloads.
