US adults viewed more videos in-app and on mobile web

US adults will spend more time viewing mobile video on apps and mobile web in 2020 compared to the previous year.

That’s according to the latest eMarketer forecast which found that overall mobile video usage will grow by five minutes while video app usage will jump 10 minutes in overall viewing time.

The average US adult is expected to watch over 2 hours of digital video in 2020, up 19 minutes from 2019.

The rise has been attributed to the COVID-19 lockdowns which saw a higher number of mobile users adopting video apps to spend time with.

Mobile gaming was also more widely adopted amidst lockdowns with US adults playing app games for 26 minutes on average – a rise of 3 minutes, compared to 2 minutes in 2019.

Meanwhile, mobile ad firm Jun Group reported that in-app ad requests in mobile gaming apps jumped 98% between March and April.

Mobile gaming developers were quick to react during lockdowns and found various ways to engage their users and gain new downloads.
