There’s little doubt that 2020 was good year for TikTok in terms of user growth. Now, a new forecast by eMarketer suggests that the app could have a larger number of Gen Z US users than Instagram by the end of 2021.

It will also surpass Snapchat by 2023, according to the prediction.

The app will have 37.3 million Gen Z monthly users by the end of the year compared to 33.3 million on Instagram.

According to Debra Aho Williamson, the eMarketer principal analyst, Instagram’s user base continues to age.

“This year, its fastest-growing age group will be ages 35 to 44 [up 7.2%], while gains will be much slower among teens 12 to 17 [0.7%] and young adults 18 to 24 [2.0%]. However, Gen Z will still make up nearly three in 10 users on Instagram [28.0%] this year, so advertisers can still find them on the platform.”

Snapchat is still the largest app in term of its Gen Z audience in the country with 42 million monthly users in the age group.

“TikTok has incredibly strong engagement and loyalty among Gen Z. The members of this generation are using it not only to be entertained, but also increasingly to learn about and discuss weightier issues such as climate change, politics, and news,” Williamson added. “Other social platforms also offer such content, but TikTok’s unique video style and aesthetic is strongly appealing to young people.”

Overall, TikTok is predicted to grow its user base by 18.3% to 78.7 million in 2021.

In 2023, the app will have 89.7 million users compared to 89.5 million on Snapchat. Instagram continues to have the highest number of users at 118.9 million.
