TikTok has become the world’s second-most downloaded app in 2019, according to new data from Sensor Tower.
Ranking just behind WhatsApp, the popular short-form video app managed to be downloaded 740 million times last year. That’s more downloads than Facebook and Messenger saw.
Other popular apps making it into the top 10 included rival Likee – another short-form video app from Singapore. The app saw more than 330 million downloads.
Although TikTok is receiving most of the praise for the revolution in short-form video content, rivals like Instagram and Snapchat are working on their own solutions.
However, compared to these major rivals TikTok has yet to implement a proper monetisation strategy.
Yes, the company is featuring ads in-app, but it’s far from being able to serve the dedicated and sophisticated tools that Facebook provides.
There are also brand safety concerns as major retailers worry their video ads may be placed next to inappropriate content which TikTok has no shortage of.
Nevertheless, user growth and plenty of downloads are a great sign for advertisers searching for the next big deal in in-app advertising platforms.
