TikTok was the most downloaded non-gaming app worldwide in August 2020.
According to the latest overview by SensorTower, the popular short video app boosted installs by 1.6% from August 2019 at over 63.3 million.
Indonesia (11%) and Brazil (9%) saw the highest number of installs during that month.
Video conferencing app Zoom came in second place with over 52.2 million installs. That represents 22.2x the downloads from August 2019 and it’s a steep rise for an app that until COVID-19 not many people knew about.
India saw the highest number of installs at 25%, followed by the US (19.5%).
Facebook ranked third, followed by Instagram and WhatsApp.
Other notable additions to the top 10 most downloaded non-gaming apps were Google Meet, Snack Video, Messenger, Snapchat and Telegram.
The ranking highlights that video conferencing and messaging apps performed strongly despite lockdowns being eased in many places.
This may be a sign of people adapting to a new normal as a growing number of users rely on apps to communicate with their loved ones. Fears of a second wave of outbreaks may also be contributing to the rise in app downloads.
A study by Ofcom showed that UK adults were spending more time sharing and viewing videos throughout lockdowns (32%) compared to watching TV.
