Pinterest is set to crack the one billion global download mark before the end of the year, according to App Annie’s latest insights report. The rise in downloads has been driven by emerging markets Brazil and LATAM.
Temple Run 2, the popular mobile game, is also entering the one billion download arena, joining Subway Surfers (which is surpassing two billion installs) and Crush Saga.
The research also shows that TikTok will likely reach a whopping three billion in global downloads in 2022 and $3 billion in consumer spending on iOS and Google Play.
At the same time, metaverse apps are on the rise. These enable users to interact more easily and in real-time through virtual avatars.
Smartphones have made it significantly easier for people all over the world to participate in the metaverse, a fact that became particularly apparent throughout the pandemic.
ROBLOX, one of the best-known metaverse apps ranked top among simulation apps for downloads, followed by Minecraft in terms of consumer spending.
What’s clear is that the gaming industry is evolving rapidly and play-to-earn models that let users earn cash while gaming are driving mobile innovations in 2022.
App Annie also expects entertainment apps to grow to $12 billion in 2022 with video streaming being one of the fastest growing categories for App Store consumers.
Hulu reached $1 billion in lifetime consumer spending in Q1 2021 and YouTube hit the $3 billion mark in the third quarter of 2021.
Entertainment apps that are on the rise include Discovery Plus and Funinmation.
