Pinterest is now the third-largest social media platform in the US in 2019, according to new data published by eMarketer.
The popular hobby blogging website surpassed Snapchat as a favourite among users.
But things had been tight in 2018 already when Snapchat had 75.8 million users compared to 75.5 million on Pinterest.
In 2019, Snapchat added more users thanks to an Android app release (80.2 million), but it still came in lower than the 82.4 million people who joined Pinterest.
Overall, growth on Pinterest was 9.1% in 2019. In 2020, eMarketer estimates that the company will reach 86 million in users.
Part of the reasons why the platform is growing so rapidly is an audience that spans all ages.
“While Snapchat has a young core audience that it caters to, Pinterest has a more universal appeal, and it’s made significant gains in a wide range of age groups,” eMarketer junior forecasting analyst Nazmul Islam said.
Pinterest users will represent 41.1% of all US social network suers in 2020, similar to Snapchat’s 39.7%.
