Blabla, the app that hires native English speakers to teach students the language, has just raised $1.54 million in a seed funding round led by Amino Capital, Starling Ventures, Y Combinator, and Wayra X.
The app’s community can learn English in a TikTok-style manner – by viewing short and engaging videos.
Blabla launched in 2019 and quickly attracted the attention of investors.
Content creations on the app are tagged via the app’s internal software algorithms and even receive subtitles.
Learners pay a subscription to receive recommendations and learn according to their abilities and level of English.
The app also features quizzes and contests.
Right now, Blabla says it has some 11,000 users each week and around 400 paid users with almost 90% of the coming from China.
In 2021, Blabla plans to grow to 300,000 students with a strong focus on the Chinese and Latin American market.
