To launch a new social media app called Public, Indian start-up Inshorts just successfully raised $60 million in a new funding round.

Inshorts is a news aggregation app that lets users summarise news in 60 words.

The latest addition to its portfolio – the Public app – is a local social app that provides users with videos about the places they live in. This includes notifications on accidents, robberies, water shortages or traffic jams, but also  free health checkup sites and water updates.

At the same time, it lets people connect.

The app is now available in several Indian languages and integrates tools for local business owners to show off their offerings.

“The world is changing every minute, and each one of us has an inherent desire to remain updated about these changes,” the company said in a brief statement.

“Both Inshorts app and Public app are aimed to help some of these people in their quest of keeping themselves informed and we are thrilled to have Vy Capital join us in our journey.”
