App sessions in food and drink apps rose 105% year-on-year according to the latest data from App Annie, the mobile analytics company.

Although global app sessions in takeaway apps dropped during Q1 2020 to 1.81 billion in March, they quickly recovered and spiked to 3.02 billion in December 2020.

China’s sessions were among the highest, tripling to 368 million. Russia also saw notable gains to 63 million sessions. Only India faced plummeting sessions due to the impact of COVID-19.

Year-on-year growth during Q4 was highest in Russia at 105%, followed by Indonesia (80%), the UK (70%), Argentina (65%) and the US (60%).

Deliveroo ranked second and third on app stores in France and the UK, respectively.

The findings reveal that UberEats stood out in markets like Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, France and the UK.

It had $8.55 billion in gross bookings during the final quarter of 2020.

For 2021, analysts are expecting healthy growth in the space even after lockdowns end.

Checkout-free grocery stores like Amazon Go are also attracting much attention from analysts for 2021.
