Disney Plus added 12.4 million subscribers between April and June, reaching a total of 116 million worldwide.

Marvel’s Loki series, Pixar’s Luca and live-action Cruella were the most popular on the streaming platform over the summer, according to Techspot.

Even though it is still 93 million subscribers behind Netflix, Disney Plus has all of the momentum on its side. Netflix added only two million subscribers in the same time period and lost 430,000 subscribers in the United States.

Disney predicted it will reach 230 to 260 million subscribers by late 2024, which could surpass Netflix if it continues its current rate of growth. Netflix plans to launch a video game service alongside its TV and film offerings.

Disney Plus vs Netflix subscribers

With another season of the Mandalorian, the What if.. Marvel series and Hawkeye series coming in 2021, Disney may be able to draw even more subscribers over. The Obi Wan Kenobi series coming in 2022 may be another big draw.

Netflix has been criticised for its failure to deliver hits, even with the success of The Crown and Cobra Kai. In its Q2 2021 earnings call, it said it expects to pick up the pace in 2022. It is estimated to spend $17 billion on content in 2021.

The success of HBO Max is another thorn in the side of Netflix, which for almost a decade had no real competition in the TV streaming market. HBO Max reported 12.3 million U.S. subscribers in Q2 2021.
