The use of COVID-19 over-the-counter testing kits grew over the last year if associated apps are anything to go by.

According to SensorTower, installs of the two most widely available over-the-counter test kit apps – Navica by BinaxNow and Ellume – rose 107% in July 2021 and 134% in August 2021 across US app stores.

These test kits are popular because consumers are able to instantly check their test results in-app as opposed to having to wait.

Ellume app downloads rose 345% in July compared to June while Navica downloads grew 31%.

Throughout much of August, vaccine verification app downloads grew as a growing number of US establishments and travel services require proof of vaccination.

Installs among the top eight verification apps in the US grew to 1.6 million, up 79% over July.

Installs of NYS Excelsior Pass Wallet rose 283% to 579k in August from 151k in July.

Docket and VeriFLY also saw jumps in verification.

Despite the uptick in app installs, it’s clear that app developers have some way to go in satisfying users many of whom have been left feeling disappointed by available app functionalities.
