2019 has been a successful year for mobile apps with consumer downloads rising 5% compared to 2018. A total of 120 billion apps were downloaded on iOS and Google Play stores.
Consumer spending is set to rise 15% faster to $90 billion in 2019.

Overall, the top 10 global app downloads featured dominant players such as Facebook Messenger, Facebook, and WhatsApp. But 2019 has also been marked by the fast rise of popular short-form video app TikTok. Instagram ranks just behind TikTok in fifth sport, followed by SHAREit, Like, Snapchat, Netflix and Spotify.
The top apps by consumer spend were led by Tinder and Netflix. Tencent Video has and iQIYI have also successfully made it to the top 10.
Breakout apps with the largest absolute growth in downloads and consumer spending were Likee, Noizz, and Helo. Video streaming apps dominated the charts.
App Annie expects that app growth will continue in 2020. Consumers are already projected to spend over $30 billion on apps and $80 billion on games next year.
