The Indonesian app market is one of the fastest growing mobile economies in the world, with a large and expanding user base of over 200 million people. While average consumer spend is still relatively low, it is rising as the economy grows.

Users in Indonesia spent an average of 5.7 hours a day on mobile apps, one of the highest averages amongst countries surveyed by data.ai. Spend has increased on entertainment apps, particularly short videos. Young people aged 18-24 in particular spent more time on social media and photo and video editing apps than the population as a whole.

Mobile games are popular among Indonesian users, making up six of the top 10 grossing apps in 2023. While spend is still low in comparison to mature Asia-Pacific markets, it has a lot of upside with the large installed playerbase.

Android-run devices make up the vast majority of smartphones in Indonesia and Google has a leading market position. The capabilities of these phones are still limited however, due to the limited coverage of 5G networks in the country.

4G coverage has reached around 97 percent of the country, but only around 15 percent of the population has access to the 5G network. There have also been issues with a shortage of mobile spectrum in both urban and rural areas.

The Indonesian government has plans to award frequency bands to dramatically increase the supply of mobile spectrum, which will be crucial to maximise the benefits from the growing userbase of tech-savvy young people spending more time and money on mobile apps.

We have collected data and statistics on the Indonesian mobile app market. Read on below to find out more.
