Mobile app development platform Ionic has closed out its Series A funding round, in which it raised $8.5m. General Catalyst was at the helm, with participation from Founder Collective, Lightbank, and Arthur Ventures.

Ionic produces a software development kit and HTML5 framework  based on AngularJS JavaScript, and is apparently being downloaded around 200,000 times each month. Since launching in late 2013, Ionic’s kit has been used to create two million apps, both commercially and by enterprise customers.

In a blog post, it’s mentioned the funding will be used to improve its software, making it even easier to use, more flexible, and more capable. In the near future, developers should look out for a stable release of Ionic 2, a Progressive Web App that supports it and version 1, plus a production release of the Ionic Platform.
