Instagram is building a set of tools to show how long users are spending on the platform. Initially revealed by app investigator Jane Wong, who discovered a Usage Insight option added to the menu in an developer version of the app, the feature was then confirmed by Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom.

Systrom tweeted:

“We’re building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram – any time should be positive and intentional.”

In a further tweet, he explained the reasoning behind the feature:

“Understanding how time online impacts people is important, and it’s the responsibility of all companies to be honest about this. We want to be part of the solution. I take that responsibility seriously.”

The Usage Insight feature follows Google’s announcement of Dashboard for Android P, which provides detail on the time spent using your phone, and in individual apps. There’s no indication when Instagram’s Usage Insight feature will launch publicly.
