The UK Government has added more features and information to its WhatsApp service dedicated to helping citizens stay informed on the coronavirus outbreak.

The chatbot has already shared more than one million messages which provide factual and trusted information on the pandemic.

The app aims to combat misinformation on the issue while ensuring that people follow government advice, stay home and help the NHS cope with the number of cases.

The added content includes advice for people who are at higher risk of infection, information about social distancing and shielding, advice for those who are pregnant and information on government pay and sick pay.

“People all over the world are using WhatsApp more than ever to connect with and support their friends, family and communities during this crisis,” explained Matt Idema, WhatsApp’s chief operating officer.

“Now, thanks to the UK Government’s Coronavirus Information Service, the British public can also get official, timely and trustworthy advice about Coronavirus on WhatsApp. We will continue to support the UK Government to develop the service with updated information and official guidance as the situation develops.”

The app can be downloaded via app stores or by texting 0044 7860 064422.
