There are now 4.02 billion mobile apps available for download in China, according to data collected by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This figure is correct until the end of June 2017, when it’s also said China has approximately 724 million mobile internet users.

The majority of apps are available through locally run app stores, with 2.32 million apps ready for download, while Apple’s App Store has 1.71 million apps inside. Mobile games represent the largest category by far, with 1.17 million games available in China, followed by 528,000 life service apps, and 421,000 ecommerce apps.

Total downloads are staggering. 119.5 billion apps were downloaded in China in the first six months of 2017, with system apps proving the most popular, followed by mobile games, and then video-related apps. Apps in these three categories were responsible for half of all the app downloads in China.
