Snapchat’s redesigned app now separates social from media

Snapchat unveiled its plans for the redesign of its app yesterday. Evan Spiegel, Co-Founder and CEO of Snapchat first criticised social media networks and in particular Facebook – without mentioning it by name of course. He wrote:

Snapchat began as an escape from social media, where people could send photos and videos to their friends without the pressure of likes, comments, and permanence. By focusing on the camera, Snapchat lowered the barrier to self-expression and showed a new generation that everyone is creative

He then laid out how the new Snapchat redesign would appear.
As usual, the app will still open with the camera. To the left of the camera, users will be shown a ‘Friends’ page to see their friends’ or followers’ stories and launch chats with them. On the right side of the camera, there’ll be a newly designed Discover page which contains publisher stories and content from creators as well as Snap Map, Search and Our Stories.
All the curated content on Discover comes in a full-screen format with vertical scrolling.
In addition, Snapchat announced that it would begin to offer creators a more rewarding experience by boosting their distribution and launching monetisation channels. With the update, users will also be able to manage their Stories on their profile page, and group chats are getting an optional group story.
Part of the redesign will include the use of algorithmic content recommendations, similar to what Netflix does, in order to drive user content discovery. That’s in contrast to what Facebook does which provides content based on friends’ likes and comments.
In order to stand out and set itself apart from social media networks, Snapchat is focusing on human curation of its content by hiring a team of content moderators to ensure that users continue to explore a diverse set of content.
Spiegel added:

With the upcoming redesign of Snapchat, we are separating the social from the media, and taking an important step forward towards strengthening our relationships with our friends and our relationships with the media. This will provide a better way for publishers to distribute and monetise their Stories, and a more personal way for friends to communicate and find the content they want to watch.

The redesigned app is being trialled among a small number of users this week and will become fully available over the coming weeks.
