Snapchat integrates with Amazon to bolster mCommerce options

Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has announced an integration with Amazon that allows users to search for products directly using their Snapchat camera.

Using the feature is simple. Snapchat users just have to point their camera at a product or a barcode, then hold on the camera screen to get started.

Upon recognising the scanned barcode or product, an Amazon link appears with the exact same product or a similar one. Users can then opt to access Amazon via the app or web address and complete their purchase.

The move further expands Snap’s ambitions within mCommerce. For example, the company added shoppable augmented reality (AR) lenses in April 2018 for brands and expanded the tool for creators and influencers by August 2018.

Furthermore, Amazon offers an affiliate marketing programme which offers a commission for linking products.

Should the integration with Snapchat prove successful, Snap could significantly grow its mCommerce arm to become part of a niche, but unique circle of social media apps.
