Snap to continue exploring hardware as spectacles outperformed its own expectations

Snap Inc. CEO Evan Spiegel recently revealed that the company sold 150,000 units of its Spectacles glasses. Although much hyped, the product evidently fell short of expectations
However, Spiegel confirmed that the sunglasses had outperformed the company’s goal to sell 100,000 pairs. It had been Snap’s first attempt at hardware.
He added that hardware would be an important driver to deliver Snapchat’s customer experience in the future.

“Our view is that hardware is going to be an important vehicle for delivering our customer experience maybe in a decade,” he said. “But if we believe it’s going to be important in a decade, we don’t want to be starting a decade from now.”

Although the results may have been a success for Snap, there is some argument that the company may have simply missed momentum as Spectacles were already hinted at back in October 2016, but then weren’t released until February 2017.
At the same time, Snap never planned to make this a huge nationwide product roll-out. Instead, the company simply planted some vending machines in core locations to attract the app’s fans.
From that point of view, Snap may have indeed done very well.
It’s not yet clear if Snapchat will be releasing a version 2 of the Spectacles, but if Spiegel’s enthusiasm for hardware is anything to go by we should be expecting a new product release soon.
