Snap Inc. could be launching a new gaming platform in April, if rumours are to be believed. Originally reported by Cheddar, the Snapchat maker has been working on a mobile gaming platform codenamed “Project Cognac”, which will feature mobile games that run in Snapchat.
According to someone familiar with the matter, Snap will likely present its mobile gaming ambitions at an upcoming summit in LA on April 4. In addition to mobile games, the company is likely to announce new video additions.
Given that Snap acquired Australian games studio Prettygreat for $8.6 million in 2018, the launch may not come as a complete surprise. At a similar time, the company also bought PlayCanvas, the web-based gaming engine start-up.
There had also been previous reports by The Information last summer that Snap could launch a gaming platform the same year.
It’s not the first time, Snap tried its hand at games either. In early 2018, the company tested augmented reality games in Snapchat and it has previously collaborated with company’s on ad-based app games.
The move likely underpins the company’s ambition to bolster revenue and games offering in-app purchases could help it to do so.
