Google is apparently set to add a Shopping tab to its homepage in India, according to sources speaking the the Economic Times. The Shopping tab makes stores searchable, allowing people to find products, and click through to buy.
The Shopping tab is already available in 30 different Google Search locations around the world, and the Indian launch will likely come before the end of 2018, say people familiar with the plans.
However, while the Shopping tab may arrive in India, Google apparently intends to partner with local ecommerce platforms including Flipkart, Snapdeal, and Paytm, rather than fulfill the payments itself.
Major retailers will feature alongside small and medium businesses, providing a range of products and sources for users to search through. It’s possible Google will use the Shopping tab to better understand local shopping trends and usage, before making further ecommerce launches in India.
There is no official confirmation of when the Shopping tab will launch, and plans may change.
