Shazam could be adding mobile video advertising after launching music video channels

Shazam, the music recognition app, has just announced the launch of music video channels for its 120 million monthly active users. In partnership with streaming music video platform Vadio it wants to expand the music experience. Now, when a user identifies a song, a thumbnail of the official music video belonging to the track will pop up.

In addition, Vadio has added queued auto-play. After one video finishes, a similar one will begin to play. However, videos do not play automatically. The user still has to click the play button.
Fabio Santini, Chief Product Officer for Shazam, says:

“We continually look for new ways to expand the ways in which our users can discover music. We want to give fans a great reason to spend more time with Shazam by giving them access to a rich and immersive music video experience. In turn, this creates new revenue opportunities for artists and, moreover, powerful ways of gaining exposure for brands.”

Vadio adds that it expects mobile video views to grow rapidly over the coming months, thanks to the partnership with Shazam.
For Shazam, the move could be a new and potentially lucrative revenue stream. Mobile video advertising is already hailed as one of the rising stars among mobile ad formats for the next few years. By allowing video channels to be curated by editors and generate trend data that reflects user interests and audience attributes, brands could eventually jump on board.
Shazam recently announced over one billion app downloads as well as profitability from advertising sales.  In addition, the company has continued to roll out new ad products and features.
For now, the company says that it hopes to grow its monthly audience having added video.
