Rune has raised funding of $2 million to further develop its artificial intelligence tech to help mobile gamers find and connect with friends. The round was led by Makers Fund, with participation from ByFounders, Paul Buchheit, E14 Fund and Venture Souq.

A Y Combinator accelerator graduate, Rune was built by doctoral students Sanjay Guruprasad and Bjarke Felbo, who both dropped out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Guruprasad told VentureBeat:

“Our emphasis is on a seamless one-button experience that both finds you teammates and connects you on voice chat.

“An analogy would be Facebook vs Instagram. Facebook is a pro-tool with thousands of features, but Instagram is mobile-first and focused on a simple “click and share” experience.”

Since its debut in March 2019, users have spent more than 50,00 hours talking on voice chat and gaming with friends through Rune.
