Pinterest launches online marketplace for curated retailers

Pinterest is set to launch a new online marketplace that will showcase select merchants. The featured retailers’ products can be purchased directly from the website called @PinterestShop.

The launch coincided with Small Business Saturday on November 30th, a day dedicated to supporting independent businesses.

Hundreds of product pins will be showcased on @PinterestShop from 17 select retailers.

The merchants, the popular hobby blogging site chose, span areas such as craftsmanship, creative home goods, handmade jewellery and accessories.

Each of the 17 merchants has been given a pinboard to show off 20 products. Shoppers can select products and check them out via Pinterest without having to be transferred to an external website.

It’s not entirely clear if more retailers will be joining the @PinterestShop or if the company plans to rotate featured retailers.

According to research, 48% of Pinners now use the website to find and shop for products. Retailers also saw 2x higher returns on ad spend on the platform compared to other social networks.

The company has been bolstering its shopping tools and product discovery with the roll-out of personalised shopping features.
