Over the last three months, the combined usage time for WhatsApp is 85.21 billion hours. This astonishing statistic comes from research company Apptopia using its new Sessions data, and shows the worldwide popularity of the messaging app.
To put this into perspective, this is nine million years, cumulatively spent using the app around the world. Apptopia’s data splits the app session time down by store, showing Facebook is the biggest time consumer in the Apple App Store with 30 billion hours, while WhatsApp is in fifth place.
In the Google Play store, WhatsApp tops the chart with 59 billion hours, leaving the remainder of around 26 billion hours for iOS. It should be noted that while WeChat is in second position overall, the data does not cover the third party app stores in China, indicating its count will be much higher.
The research also reveals the amount of time spent in games over the past three months. Clash of Clans is at the top of the overall list with 3.83 billion hours, considerably less than in WhatsApp.
