LINE Pay Corporation which operates the mobile app payment services available on the LINE app including LINE Pay mobile money transfer has integrated with WeChat Pay merchants in Japan.
The integration enables WeChat Pay users to scan a Japanese LINE Pay merchant’s QR code to pay their WeChat Pay balance.
Chinese travellers will therefore be able to use their WeChat app to pay for goods when travelling in Japan.
Yet, LINE Pay will not be accepted in China via WeChat Pay locations.
Retailers signing up for the feature will also be able to integrate with NAVER Pay (a payment solution for Koreans) and WeChat Pay as part of the LINE Pay Global Alliance.
An estimated 8.38 million Chinese travellers visit Japan each year.
Similar to LINE Pay, merchants aren’t being charged fees for accepting WeChat Pay payments until 2021.
