Facebook plans to roll out in-app ads on its WhatsApp messenger app in 2020, the company announced at its Marketing Summit in Rotterdam.
The in-app ad format will take over the full screen and appear in WhatsApp Statuses. Users can then swipe up to be redirected to a brand’s website.
One of the first advertising features Facebook is rolling out allows users to communicate directly with businesses. In addition, the company is launching a WhatsApp ad feature that appears to tie in with Instagram by redirecting users from Instagram ads to WhatsApp.
The company has also announced a third set of ads that will be displayed in the WhatsApp Status and then promoted on Facebook.
Although WhatsApp originally promised to remain ad-free, since the app was purchased by Facebook in 2014 for $19 billion it has been slowly making preparations to connect businesses with its over 1.5 billion current users.
Just recently, Facebook showcased the WhatsApp Business Catalog, which allows smaller businesses to showcase their products on the app.
Ads across WhatsApp statuses were already rumoured back in November 2018 when VP Chris Daniels said they would become a main source of monetisation for the company.
