Google Maps is now available on Apple’s CarPlay in-car infotainment platform. Apple announced the introduction of third-party navigation apps to CarPlay during its WWDC developer conference, and now an update to the iOS Google Maps app makes it possible.

To use Google Maps in your car, it needs to have a CarPlay compatible system installed, and your iOS device needs iOS 12 installed too. Google has released version 5.0 of Google Maps in the App Store, so ensure the Google Maps app is right up to date.

Google writes in its update comments:

“Things we’re excited about: rainbows, puppies, and navigating with Google Maps on Apple CarPlay. Check it out to get the best of Google Maps right in your car’s built-in display!”

Provided all these steps are met, Google Maps should appear as an option alongside Apple Maps on CarPlay’s navigation page. Google’s own competing Android Auto platform is not yet open to third-party navigation apps.
