Facebook is working on a voice-powered virtual assistant

Facebook could be working on a new voice-powered virtual assistant similar to Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri.

Although a spokesperson confirmed the news to Reuters not much is currently known about the social media company’s plans.

If rumours are to be believed, the voice and AI technology would enable users to pair other virtual and augmented reality devices such as the Oculus headset and Portal smart display.

The move would ensure that Facebook stays on trend with major rivals and provides customers an opportunity to interact in a more engaging manner.

According to ex-employees of Facebook, the AI development is currently underway in Washington, US.

Although Facebook has previously tested AI-powered features such as an M Assistant for its Messenger app, the company has yet to roll out a more dedicated AI-powered technology.

It’s early days for AI with devices such as the Oculus headsets continuing to grab only a niche market. However, if Facebook can get in early on the action it is more likely to be able to have a chance of a sizeable market share in the future.
