More than 480 million mobile VPN apps have been downloaded from Apple and Google Android app stores over the last 12 months, according to a new report from Top10VPN.
The result represents an increase of 54% in VPN app downloads compared to last year.
Based on app download data across 73 countries, the report found that demand for VPN apps across the App Store and Google Play is growing rapidly.
The majority (75%) of downloads were for Android compared to 122 million for iOS.
The top growth markets for mobile VPN downloads were APAC (up 122%) and LATAM (up 50%). However, China was excluded from the data because of unreliable data.
The top three countries for VPN app downloads were Indonesia (75.5 million), the US (74.6 million) and India (57 million). India saw the highest year-on-year spike in downloads at 405%. The rise in downloads in the country is a direct response to government restrictions on certain apps and online services.
“The surge was most pronounced overall in the Asia-Pacific (APAC), a region heavily afflicted by political and social unrest in the past 12 months, where 188 million apps were downloaded, which was more than double the previous year’s total,” said Simon Migliano, Head of Research at Top10VPN.
Free VPN apps (84.3%) significantly outnumber paid apps (15.7%).
The most popular services across both app stores include TurboVPN, Hotspot Shield, Betternet and Psiphon.
