ByteDance tests new music app Resso in India

ByteDance, the company behind popular video app TikTok, is testing a new music app in India to capture a share of the local entertainment app market.

Named Resso, the app is only available in India and Indonesia and has been installed around 27,000 times by iOS and Android users.

Resso is a direct competitor to Apple Music and Spotify, but compared to them it displays the lyrics in real-time and allows users to post comments on each track.

Monthly subscriptions for Resso cost $2.30 – the same as Spotify. Premium Resso users can also download tracks and listen to music without ad breaks.

Like TikTok, the new app lets users create GIFs and videos that use their favourite tunes.

For now, the company has secured music licensing deals with Indian labels T-Series and Times Music, but not with the three majors.

“Resso is currently in a beta testing phase,” said a Resso spokesperson in a statement. “We are optimistic about its long-term prospects but we are still very early in the process and only in a limited number of developing markets.”
