Bad press is good press: Snapchat installs soar despite backlash on redesign

Despite a continued backlash following the Snapchat redesign, downloads of the app actually went up just one week after the redesign launched. According to new data from Sensor Tower, Snapchat app installs increased 55% week-on-week in the US across both the Apple and Android app stores.
The growth contradicts widespread media coverage concerning a user backlash and complaints about the redesign of the app.
New installs of the app shot up 41% to 76% a week after the redesign roll-out.
First time installs increased from 589,000 by 30th January to 911,000 by 5th February. That’s a jump if 322,000 installs.
Sensor Tower added that these were new and unique installs and not re-installs of the app.
Perhaps the old saying: bad press is good press worked for Snap Inc on this occasion.
Ahead of the redesign, the app had dropped from the top 10 free iPhone apps. Thanks to the boost in installs, it now ranks 5th in the app store.
However, it remains to be seen if the new users will hang around.
