Apple plans to launch an augmented reality (AR) headset in 2022 and a pair of AR glasses in 2023, according to The Information.

The headset apparently looks like a slimmed-down version of the Oculus Quest which was launched in May 2019. It will feature AR and virtual reality (VR) functions. The headset is also able to map a user’s surroundings. It’s apparently capable of blending virtual objects with real ones.

Although some industry experts had expected Apple to move into AR much sooner (next year), Apple told employees that developers would begin creating software for the headset by 2021.

Once released, the headset is being followed up with a pair of AR glasses. Prototypes resemble sunglasses and these can be worn for much longer periods of time.

For Apple, AR and VR are the next big frontiers. As each new iPhone becomes old news quicker than its predecessor, AR will likely spice up the tech world again.
