Unlockd, the mobile platform based in Melbourne, announced an exclusive partnership with Boost Mobile, a Sprint prepaid brand, to launch Android app Boost Dealz. The app, hailed as the first of its kind to help consumers reduce their phone bill in exchange for viewing ad content and offers when unlocking their smartphones, is being launched exclusively in the US.

Available to current and new Boost customers, Boost Dealz gives users $5 credit every 30 days for watching branded content and offers. Users get to select their interests in order to received more tailored content. Brands such as Starbucks, Levi’s and Lyft are already among those showing targeted ads when a user unlocks their Android smartphone. Consumers can then choose to interact further with the ad or dismiss it.
Douglas Smith, Director of prepaid product marketing, Sprint Telecom, says:
“Providing Boost subscribers with options to reduce their cost to communicate is in line with our goal of being the value leader in prepaid. Boost Dealz, built on the Unlockd solution, is an industry-first, completely optional opportunity for our customers to earn value in exchange for learning about products and services aligned with their interests. In addition, it delivers a new revenue stream to our business while providing an innovative avenue for advertisers and media publishers to reach a highly targeted audience.”
Unlockd provides a mobile technology that connects marketers to consumers via a proprietary platform. This solution aims to change the way people use and pay for their phones, offering discounts in exchange for user content participation. The start-up raised $15m last year. Its investors include Matt Rockman from Seek.com, Andrew Walsh from Hitwise, Gabby and Hexi Leibovich from Catch of the Day Group, Virgin Australia’s Sam Mostyn, Margaret Jackson from Spotless Chair, and Seven Group’s Peter Gammell.
It initially launched in Australia in October 2015 with Lebara Mobile, in the US with Boost Mobile in January 2016 and has plans to roll out products in the UK, Indonesia, India, China and Singapore until the end of 2016.
Matt Berriman, CEO and Co-Founder, Unlockd, says:
“Our US launch exclusively with Sprint Telecom is a realization of our vision to forever change the way consumers pay for and use their mobile phones. To be the driver for collaboration and benefit for some of the world’s biggest media companies, a tier-one telco and the end consumer is a huge coup and a move that will positively transform both the mobile advertising landscape and telco industry.”
In giving something back to the consumer, the solution also creates a new revenue stream from publishers and advertisers for telcos.
Unlockd has a partnership in place with Yahoo Search to improve mobile engagement and help partners monetise. In addition, it has partnered with Twitter and SSP MoPub.
Jeff Emmanuel, Founder of PLC Venture Capital (former Citibank Vice Chairman) and an investor in Unlockd, says:
“Our group was particularly attracted to Unlockd because it is such a clever and simple innovation. It helps solve such a huge problem facing the global telecommunications industry, that of falling ARPU’s [average revenue per user].”
