California is often talked about when discussing technology thanks to its giants like Google, Microsoft and Facebook, to name a few, and Silicon Valley inevitably gets mentioned in the conversation. But there’s more than one technology hub in the region, and the Los Angeles Area should not be ignored.

As well as the presence of the Los Angeles Tech Week since 2013, the city and the area around it is rife with tech companies and mobile app app developers. Here we’ve picked the best six from the region, displayed below in no order whatsoever, and judged using the following criteria:

Dom and Tom is a small studio with offices in New York, Chicago and the LA neighbourhood of Venice. Their portfolio spans as wide as their geography does, having worked on varied mobile projects like study guides to price comparison sites and foodie apps, to name a few. A small team but nonetheless at the cutting edge of mobile solutions and UI design, their problem-solving approach has led to 74 apps delivered across all platforms, 2000+ web projects and high customer satisfaction.

Digital Brand Group is one of the larger companies in this list, and their portfolio is pretty eclectic – they’ve worked in all sorts of sectors from healthcare and advertising to media and manufacturing. As well as developing for all major platforms, they have a strong focus on digital strategy, and will help formulate one for your app as well as developing and launching it. They’ve also worked on wearables and big data, and have recently opened a “New Ventures” section to help companies with IT architecture, design and engineering.

Sidebench Studios is another one of the smaller studios, with 17 people to its roster, and delivering some fantastic apps with that team. Their apps are made with “UX-driven design” in mind, and while they’ve worked with large companies like Red Bull and Pabst Blue Ribbon, their solutions are bespoke and attractive to start-ups and smaller companies too. They were also one of the top mobile app developers in 2014 in Los Angeles according to Sourcing Line, and have developed their own augmented reality platform.
