Daimler’s mytaxi app drives into Romania with new acquisition

Mytaxi, the European taxi e-hailing app owned by German automotive giant Daimler, has expanded into Romania by acquiring the popular Clever Taxi app. The parties did not disclose the exact details of the transaction, but stated that the valuation was set an an eight-figure number.

Clever Taxi, which was founded in 2010 by Mihai Rotaru and Alexandru Dumitru, operates in 20 major cities in Romania and has 17,000 registered taxi drivers and around 600,000 registered customers. It has provided more than 40 million rides in the country since 2010.

Mytaxi has now grown to 120,000 registered drivers and over seven million customers after the acquisition, with Romania becoming the 11th European country in which it operates. Launched in 2009, mytaxi was the world’s first app to enable a direct connection between taxi users and taxi drivers.
