Smartphones are expected to be an even more key part of the Christmas shopping experience in 2018, according to a survey by PwC. The amount of online shoppers who expect to use a smartphone to shop has increased from 12% in 2017 to 16% this year, says the company’s research.

A massive 84% of shoppers will buy items online this year, it’s said, which is inline with figures collected in 2017, which emphasizes the shift away from other means of purchasing goods online towards mobile.

Half of shoppers only planning to shop online this year will so with a smartphone, while the remaining 50% will split shopping time between the desktop, a tablet, and smart home products such as Amazon Alexa.

A sizable 39% of those aged between 17 and 22 will tap a “buy” button during the holiday season, but 25% said they prefer to use shoppable photos — an initiative used by Instagram. There are rumors Instagram may introduce a standalone shopping app in the future.
