Snap Inc seems to be exploring new avenues to generate revenue.
Now, the company has opened a merchandise store within the Snapchat app. Snapchatters and fans of the creative messaging app will be able to purchase clothing as well as other branded items.
The Snap Store can be navigated to via the Discover section of the app. Among the featured products are t-shirts and hoodies with various Snapchat designs.
Although the app shop is currently only featuring own-brand products, Snap may be testing the feature to add outside brands in the future.
For eager shoppers, the company has launched a Snap Code that lets users navigate straight to the store by using the Snapchat camera.
Although the company is reportedly not looking to use the store as a serious revenue target, but instead serves to engage and reward fans of the app, the Snap Store offers a great way to test the potential of a future marketplace on Snapchat.
The company has struggled to meet revenue targets and laid off staff following stagnating profitability. Although Snapchat hoped to bolster engagement by launching a redesigned version of its app, it has failed to garner many positive reviews and instead attracted widespread criticism amongst its user base.
The Snap Store is not the first time the company has ventured into merchandise. The firm launched Spectacles in 2016. However, revenue from the glasses was widely considered to have been disappointing.
