Business software company, and former maker of smartphones, BlackBerry has sued Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp. The documents show the company considers the messaging technology inside the three apps to be based on its own.
The lawsuit says:
“Defendants created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative security, user interface, and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”
Facebook responded in a statement given to Cnet:
“Blackberry’s suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight.”
BlackBerry says it has been negotiating with Facebook for several years, but no deal has been reached. BlackBerry concentrates on software for businesses and automotive today, but licenses its name out to TCL Communications, which builds smartphones with the BlackBerry name.
