While Silicon Valley and other startup hubs around the world can boast a plethora of unicorns, Mercari became Japan’s first (pre-IPO startup) bona-fide unicorn when, at the beginning of March 2016, it announced it had fundraised 8.4 billion yen ($74 million) in a series D round. New investors include Globis Capital Partners,  Global Brain, Mercari’s board members, Mitsui & Co. and other Japanese finance companies. With this latest announcement, the company has secured a total of 1.26 billion yen ($110 million)
